Additional Information: The Harrowing Journey through Storyboard Animatics

These storyboard animatics were created between the years 2001 and 2005. I started storyboarding at Loyola Marymount University, in a class called Advanced Storyboarding, taught by the most challenging and informing teacher I've ever had, Jay Oliva http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0646515/ . The storyboard curriculum at LMU; http://www.lmu.edu/, was excellent but the advanced classes were arduous to say the least. I watched countless inspirational clips from all kinds of great films in order to study their composition and camera direction. Creating my own story seemed to be the most difficult thing to get passed but a great experience all around. Though I tried to create my own storyboard animatic style, I struggled from hours of drawing and attending regular core classes like history and philosophy. Sometimes drawing 8 hours a day for about 2 months at a time. Unfortunately, I had to retake the class twice... but at least I got to storyboard with one of the best in the industry. When I finally graduated from his class I really began to appreciate the planning and strategy involved in making a film compositionally beautiful, while maintaining film direction, and narrative. As a well-rounded storyboarder I've experienced both traditional and new age media approaches in creating storyboards. I've used these same principles and skills in the 3D Flash realm by reusing my knowledge to tell a narrative story by portraying it in a straight forward and easy to understand manner. I currently work at American Honda Motor Company; http://www.honda.com, and work with storyboards to create a narrated 3D interactive program along with instructional simulations. These 3D Flash Modules were created for Honda / Acura Service Technicians and Specialists, to study and interact with. Through use of a well planned UI, I can navigate any story. By using Flash as the engine and my animation as the narrative I've created entire cartoons that are both dynamic, educational, and interactive. For example: http://www.joesid.com/flashSamples.html.

At about the same time in 2005, I was working on my 3D Flash Video Game thesis project using the Mode7 Mario Kart engine located here: http://www.joesid.com/flashgame_mode7.html. Since then I've been trying to unite the world of storyboarding with the developing world of Flash. By combining these two I've been able to organize my ideas and to tell a clear narrative in the form of a 2D or 3D animation.

The programs used were the following:
